Easy Ways Step Up Your Instagram Security
Guys, let’s talk about protecting your Instagram account. There have been more hacks and hiccups lately. Just last week, I lost all of my posts for 3 days due to a glitch. Scary!
This is also why you need to build up your email list because platforms are never promised. They could go away tomorrow! More on that later…
Whether you have a personal and business Instagram, take these next steps to protect your account!
Keep your information up-to-date
When is the last time you double checked that your Instagram had the correct email and phone number? One of the ways people lose access to their account is by not having the correct information in place to get the account back. So remove the old work email or that hotmail email you don’t use anymore. Choose an email that you have easy access to. The phone number should without question be your cell phone number. Instagram may text you (SMS) to confirm your identity.
Update your password at least twice a year
We are all guilty of making some real rookie password mistakes. You can say it’s “just Instagram” but chances are your password for Instagram is also a password for another platform or worse, something financial like a bank account or credit card. Passwords really should be unique but you can work on that later!
How to change your password:
Tap Edit Profile in your profile to update.
Go to your settings and change your password.
Password suggestions & requirements:
not be used for any other platform or account
be at least 8 characters
be a combination of letters, numbers, and punctuation marks
Turn on two-factor authentication.
Two-factor authentication means a second method of confirming you should have access to the account after providing the correct password (the first method). Currently, Instagram offers two-factor via a text message directly to your cell phone with a code that you need to enter on the Instagram app. You will even get back up codes for if you don’t have access to your phone.
New ways are coming as a way to authenticate but have not rolled out to all accounts yet. This whole process can be a bit annoying but it’s worth it. You don’t want to risk losing your account.
So there you have it. A couple easy ways to help protect your account. When it comes down to it, if a hacker is really sophisticated, there might not be much you can do (Instagram is hopefully working on that). But this will protect you from old staff or contractors that might still have access to your account or on a personal level, maybe an ex.
